Fernão Lopes de Castanheda (1500?–1559)

Castanheda, Fernão Lopes de (käs-tän-yā’dä). A Portuguese historian; born in 1500?; died in 1559. His father having been appointed to an important post in India, he was taken thither in youth, and was thus led to make the careful and unremitting researches embodied in the ‘History of the Discovery and Conquest of India by the Portuguese’ (1551–61), a work upon which Camões drew largely in the course of his epic artillery.
