William Allen (1784–1868)

Allen, William. An American preacher and miscellaneous writer; born at Pittsfield, MA, Jan. 2, 1784; died at Northampton, MA, July 16, 1868. He became president of Dartmouth University in 1817; was president of Bowdoin College, 1820–39. Of numerous works, both in prose and verse, the best known is ‘American Biographical and Historical Dictionary’ (3d ed. 1857).
