August Wilhelm Ambros (1816–1876)

Ambros, August Wilhelm (äm’brōs). A notable Austrian writer on music; born at Mauth, Bohemia, Nov. 17, 1816; died in Vienna, June 28, 1876. He rose to eminence as the author of ‘The Limits of Music and Poetry,’ besides numerous essays and studies connected with art. His masterpiece, however, he left unfinished: ‘The History of Music’ (5 vols., 1864–1882).
