Gonzalo Fernández de Oviedo y Valdéz (1478–1557)

Fernández de Oviedo y Valdéz, Gonzalo (ōv-yā’dō ē väl’dāth). A Spanish historian; born in Madrid in 1478; died in Valladolid in 1557. In 1545 he was appointed historian of the Spanish Indies. The first part of his great work appeared as ‘General and Natural History of the West Indies,’ in 1535; the revision of the entire work was completed in 1548. It was once deemed one of the profoundest works on the natural history of America.
