Arend Simonsz Fokke (1755–1812)
Fokke, Arend Simonsz (fōk’ė). A Dutch essayist; born at Amsterdam, July 2, 1755; died there, Nov. 15, 1812. Besides scientific writings, both serious and burlesque, he wrote several literary satires: ‘The Modern Helicon’ (1792) and ‘Apollo, Sergeant of the Burghers’ Guard’; ‘Life of Lucifer’ (1799), a history of demonology in form of a comic romance; the psychological disquisition ‘The Different Aspects of Human Life’ (1786); ‘Woman Is Boss’ (1807).
