Samuel Foote (1720–1777)
Foote, Samuel. An English wag, impersonator, and comic playwright; born at Truro in Cornwall, 1720; died at Dover, Oct. 21, 1777. He got his reputation on the stage by impersonating real and imaginary people and acting little farces by himself. Later he wrote regular farce-plays, 22 in number; the most notable being ‘The Minor’ (1760), a skit at the Methodists; ‘The Liar’; ‘The Mayor of Garratt.’ His repartees are famous, and have been collected into a volume.
