Robert Garnier (1544–1590)

Garnier, Robert (gär-nē-ā’). A French poet; born in La Ferté-Bernard, ME, in 1544; died at Le Mans, Aug. 15, 1590. His ‘Floral Diversions’ caused him to be more widely known as a poet than as a lawyer. He wrote eight tragedies that attracted much attention, ‘Porcie’ and ‘Bradamante’ being the best; but they are scarcely adapted to the stage. He was the predecessor of Corneille, and marks a distinct epoch in the development of French literature.
