Robert Giseke (1827–1890)

Giseke, Robert. A German dramatist, novelist, and poet; born in Marienwerder, Jan. 15, 1827; died at Leubus, Dec. 12, 1890. Early an accomplished theologian and an authority on philosophy and history, his prospects were destroyed by his political utterances in 1848, and he was driven to journalism for a livelihood. After some years he began to write novels, of which the best is perhaps ‘Otto Ludwig Brook.’ But his original and striking plays gave him his greatest renown; notably ‘The Two Cagliostros’; ‘Lucifer, or the Demagogues’; ‘The Elector Maurice of Saxony’; and ‘A Burgomaster of Berlin.’
