William Archer (1856–1924)

Archer, William. A Scottish critic of the drama; born at Perth, Sept. 23, 1856; died in 1924. He graduated at Edinburgh University, 1876, and was called to the bar, 1883. He was dramatic critic for various London papers, and published books on the drama, including: ‘English Dramatists of To-day’ (1882); ‘Masks or Faces: A Study in the Psychology of Acting’ (1888); ‘Henry Irving,’ a critical study (1883); ‘William Ch. Macready, a Biography’ (1890); ‘Playmaking’ (1912). He is the English translator of Ibsen’s dramas (1890–91).
