Arthur de Gobineau (1816–1882)
Gobineau, Joseph Arthur, Comte de. A French diplomatist, ethnologist, and romance-writer; born at Bordeaux in 1816; died at Paris, Oct. 1882. During a long diplomatic career he held important positions in all parts of the world. Among his publications are: ‘On the Inequality of Human Races’ (1853–55), which has been the point of departure for a new ethnological school; ‘Religions and Philosophies in Central Asia’ (1865); ‘History of the Persians’ (1869). In fiction he produced: ‘Typhaine Abbey’ (1867), a romance; ‘Souvenir of Travels’ (1872), stories; ‘Asiatic Tales’ (1876), translated into English as ‘Romances of the East’; ‘Amadis,’ a poem in three books (unfinished), published posthumously in 1887.
