François Guizot (1787–1874)

Guizot, François Pierre Guillaume (gē-zō’). A great French historian and statesman; born at Nîmes, Oct. 4, 1787; died at Val Richer, near Lisieux, Sept. 12, 1874. His most important works are: ‘The History of Civilization in Europe’; ‘The History of Civilization in France’; ‘History of the English Revolution’; ‘Shakespeare and his Time’; and his own ‘Memoirs.’ He also wrote: ‘Memoirs relating to the History of France to the Thirteenth Century’; ‘Corneille and his Time’ (1852); ‘Meditations on the Present State of the Christian Religion’ (1865); ‘History of France for my Grandchildren’ (1870–75).
