Richard Hakluyt (c. 1553–1616)

Hakluyt, Richard (hak’löt). An English churchman geographer; born in Herefordshire (or London?) in 1552 or 1553; died on Nov. 23, 1616. In 1589 (enlarged 1598–1600) appeared his great collection: ‘The Principall Navigations, Voiages, and Discoveries of the English Nation.’ The Hakluyt Society, of London, which publishes old and rare books on geography and navigation, was named in his honor. (See Critical and Biographical Introduction).
