Samuel Carter Hall (1800–1889)
Hall, Samuel Carter. An English editor and miscellaneous writer; born at Topsham, Devonshire, England, in 1800; died on March 16, 1889. For over forty years he was the editor of the Art Journal, which he founded in 1839. In collaboration with his wife (see Ann Maria) he published the well-known work, ‘Ireland, its Scenery and Character’ (1841–43); ‘Book of Royalty’ (1838); ‘A Woman’s Story’ (1857); ‘The Book of the Thames’ (1859); ‘A Companion to Killarney’ (1878); and others. His separate works were: ‘A Book of Memories’; ‘Book of British Ballads’; ‘Baronial Halls.’
