Philip Gilbert Hamerton (1834–1894)
Hamerton, Philip Gilbert. An English artist, art-writer, and writer on many topics; born at Laneside, Lancashire, Sept. 10, 1834; died near Boulogne, France, Nov. 4, 1894. His works include: ‘Thoughts about Art’; ‘Etching and Etchers’; ‘Contemporary French Painters’; ‘Painting in France’; ‘The Intellectual Life’; ‘The Graphic Arts’; ‘Human Intercourse’; ‘The Quest of Happiness’; ‘Autobiography’ (incomplete, but supplemented by his widow); and two or three novels. His most characteristic work is ‘A Painter’s Camp in the Highlands.’ (See Critical and Biographical Introduction).
