Joel Hawes (1789–1867)

Hawes, Joel. An American Congregational divine, and religious and ethical writer; born in Massachusetts, 1789; died in 1867. He was settled at Hartford, CT, 1818–67. He wrote: ‘Religion of the East’; ‘Looking-Glass for Ladies’; ‘Washington and Jay’; ‘Tribute to the Pilgrims’; etc.
