Jan Pieter Heije (1809–1876)

Heije, Jan Pieter (hī’e). A Dutch poet and critic; born in Amsterdam, March 1, 1809; died there, Feb. 24, 1876. A prominent physician in Amsterdam, he composed songs and rectified scores. His ‘Songs of Childhood’ and ‘Book of Songs for the People’ largely influenced popular melody. His poetry is strongly national. His prose, comprising essays and criticisms, is terse and vigorous.
