Robert Herrick (1591–1674)

Herrick, Robert. An English poet; born in London in Aug. 1591; died at Dean Prior, Devonshire, Oct. 15, 1674. He was a royalist clergyman forced from his living during the Civil War, but reinstated upon the restoration. Moody and merry by turns, the many ‘Noble Numbers,” as well as the ‘Hesperides,’ produce in succession laughter and tears, but are sometimes open to the charge of mischievousness. Every revival of the forms of the lighter Muse brings the poet into remembrance. (See Critical and Biographical Introduction).
