Ausonius (c. 310–c. 395)
Ausonius, Decimus Magnus (â-sō’ni-us). A Roman poet of the fourth century; born at Bordeaux. He stood in high favor with the emperors Valentinian and Gratian. One of his most ambitious poems is a fulsome eulogy of Gratian. He wrote a number of ‘Idyls,’ ‘Elegies,’ and ‘Epistles.’ He is at his best in ‘The Moselle,’ one of his idyls, in which he describes a voyage on that river and the Rhine.
