William Austin (1778–1841)
Austin, William. An American descriptive and story-writer; born in Charlestown, MA, March 2, 1778; died there, June 27, 1841. Graduated from Harvard in 1798, and afterwards became prominent as a lawyer. A two-years’ residence in England (1802–4) resulted in ‘Letters from London,’ containing descriptions of many distinguished residents of that city. He is the author of ‘Peter Rugg, the Missing Man’ (1824–26), a legendary tale published in the New England Galaxy, which attracted much attention.
