Antoine Houdart de La Motte (1672–1731)

La Motte, Antoine Houdart de (lÚ-môt’). A French poet; born at Paris, Jan. 17, 1672; died there, Dec. 26, 1731. His first dramatic composition ‘Originals,’ was a failure; but some of his operas, his tragedy ‘Inès del Castro’ (1723), and his comedy ‘The Swell,’ had great success. The ‘Odes’ and ‘Fables’ like all his lyric compositions, though they show considerable invention, are artificial and lack spontaneity.
