Pierre Larousse (1817–1875)

Larousse, Pierre (lä-rös’). A French lexicographer; born at Toucy, Oct. 23, 1817; died on Jan. 3, 1875. In 1864 appeared the first volume of his ‘Great Universal Dictionary of the Nineteenth Century’ (completed 1876, 15 vols., with supplementary volumes 1878 and 1887). He also published two smaller works of the same class, the ‘New Illustrated Dictionary,’ and ‘Complete Illustrated Dictionary.’
