Charles Robert Leslie (1794–1859)

Leslie, Charles Robert. An English painter and writer on art; born in London, Oct. 19, 1794; died there, May 5, 1859. He was brought to America by his parents in 1799, but returning to England (1811), studied art under Allston and West. For a brief period he was instructor in art at West Point, NY, and later professor of painting at the Royal Academy (1848–52). His published works include: ‘Memoirs of John Constable’ (1845); ‘Handbook for Young Painters’ (1855), an enlarged edition of his Royal Academy lectures; and a ‘Life of Reynolds’ (completed by Taylor, 1865).
