|Liguori, Alfonso Maria de (lē-gwō'rē). An Italian theologian and Doctor of the Church; born at Naples, 1696; died on Aug. 1, 1787. While bishop of Sant Agata de Goti, he founded the religious congregation of Redemptorists. He was beatified in 1816; canonized in 1839; proclaimed Doctor of the Universal Church in 1871. He wrote Moral Theology (ed. of 1881, 8 vols.), and many books of devotion.|
