Juan Manuel (1282–1347)

Manuel, Don Juan (mä-nö-el’). A Spanish prince and famous miscellaneous writer; born at Escalona, 1282; died in 1347 or 1349. He was one of the first and best of Spanish prose-writers, best known by ‘El Conde Lucanor’ (Count Lucanor: 1575), a collection of fifty tales in the Eastern style. It was translated into English by James York (new ed. 1888).
