Charles Merivale (1808–1893)

Merivale, Charles. An English historian and divine; born at Barton Place, Devonshire, March 8, 1808; died at Ely, Dec. 27, 1893. He was dean of Ely from 1869. He wrote: ‘History of the Romans under the Empire’ (1850–62), his principal work, extending from Cæsar’s Gallic campaigns to Commodus, where Gibbon begins; ‘General History of Rome’ (1875); ‘Lectures on Early Church History’ (1879); etc.
