Bangs, John Kendrick. An American humorist and novelist; born at Yonkers, NY, May 27, 1862; died in 1922. He was one of the founders of Life, and was famed for his light verse and humorous stories, among which may be mentioned: ‘Coffee and Repartee’ (1886); ‘Mr. Bonaparte of Corsica’ (1895): ‘Water Ghost and Other Stories’ (1896); ‘The Mantel-Piece Minstrels’ (1896); ‘The Bicyclers and Other Farces’ (1896); ‘A Houseboat on the Styx’ (1896); ‘A Rebellious Heroine’ (1896); ‘The Pursuit of the Houseboat’ (1897); ‘The Idiot at Home’ (1900); ‘The Genial Idiot’ (1908); ‘The Foothills of Parnassus’ (1914).
