Harrison Gray Otis (1765–1848)
Otis, Harrison Gray. An American statesman and orator, son of James; born in Boston, Oct. 8, 1765; died there, Oct. 28, 1848. He was Member of Congress 1797–1801, and U.S. Senator 1817–22. He was prominent in the Massachusetts Legislature; took an active part in the Hartford Convention of 1814; and was mayor of Boston in 1829. His published works include: ‘Letters in Defense of the Hartford Convention’ (1824), and ‘Orations and Addresses.’
