William Penn (1644–1718)

Penn, William. The founder of Pennsylvania; born at London, Oct. 14, 1644; died on July 30, 1718. He wrote: ‘Truth Exalted,’ a religious tract expounding the doctrines or principles of the Friends (1668); ‘A Sandy Foundation Shaken’ (1668), an impeachment of the Athanasian Creed; ‘No Cross, No Crown’ (1669), written in the prison of the Tower of London, to which he had been committed for publication of the Anti-Athanasian tract without license; ‘Reasonableness of Toleration’ (1689); ‘Primitive Christianity Revived in the Faith and Practice of the People Called Quakers’ (1696); and many other works.
