James Gates Percival (1795–1856)
Percival, James Gates. An American poet and scientist; born in Kensington, CT, Sept. 15, 1795; died at Hazel Green, WI, May 2, 1856. During his career he was a professor of chemistry at West Point, army surgeon, botanist, and State geologist of Connecticut; as well as a poet. His chief works are: ‘Prometheus’ (1820); ‘Clio’ (1822), prose and verse; ‘Dream of a Day’ (1843).
