Louis Petit de Julleville (1841–1900)

Petit de Julleville, Louis (pe-tē’ dė zhül-vēl’). A French historian of literature; born at Paris, July 18, 1841; died there, Aug. 28, 1900. He became professor of French literature in the Sorbonne. His principal work is ‘History of the Theatre in France’ (5 vols., 1880–86); it is very full with regard to the old French theatre. He gives in ‘The Theatre in France’ (1889) an account of the evolution of the French drama down to the present time. In 1896 he commenced the publication of a ‘History of the French Language and Literature,’ to be comprised in 8 vols.
