Mikhail Pogodin (1800–1875)

Pogodin, Mikhail Petrovich (pō-gō’din). A Russian historian; born at Moscow, Nov. 23, 1800; died there, Dec. 20, 1875. He wrote: ‘On the Origin of the Russians’ (1823); ‘Character of Ivan the Terrible’ (1828); ‘Complicity of Godunov in the Murder of Demetrius’ (1829); ‘Marfa Posadniza,’ a tragedy (1831); ‘Stories’ (3 vols., 1833); ‘History of the Pseudo-Demetrius’ (1835); ‘Russian History’ (7 vols., 1846–54; the work was left unfinished); ‘Researches on the Historic Basis of Serfdom’ (1858); ‘The First Seventeen Years of the Reign of Peter the Great’ (1875).
