Nikolai Polevoi (1796–1846)

Polevoi, Nikolai Alekseevich (pō-lev’oi). A Russian novelist, dramatist, and literary critic; born at Irkutsk, July 4, 1796; died at St. Petersburg, March 6, 1846. His dramatic compositions are: ‘Ugolino’; ‘Parasha’; ‘Little Grandfather of the Russian Fleet’; they have a place in the repertoire of Russian theatres. He wrote also ‘History of the Russian People’ (6 vols., 1829–33).
