Charles Potvin (1818–1902)

Potvin, Charles (pot-va‘). A Belgian poet, and historian of literature; born at Mons, Dec. 2, 1818; died at Ixelles, March 1, 1902. He wrote several volumes of lyric poetry: ‘Poems and Amours’ (1838); ‘Poems, Historical and Romantic’ (2 vols., 1840); ‘Political and Elegiac Poems’ (1849); ‘Satires’ (1852); ‘The Beggar-Woman’ (1856). On the drama he wrote: ‘The Theatre in Belgium’ (1862); ‘Essays on Dramatic Literature’ (2 vols., 1880); and some comedies, as ‘Choice of an Occupation’ and ‘War.’ He also wrote many volumes of literary history and criticism, among them: ‘Our Early Literary Periods’ (2 vols., 1870), and ‘French Literature in Belgium before 1830.’
