Sir Walter Raleigh (1554?–1618)
Raleigh, Sir Walter. The famous English admiral adventurer; born at Hayes in Devonshire, 1554?; executed, Oct. 29, 1618. In spite of his extensive enterprises in the new world he found much time for literary work and association with men of letters. He published during his lifetime, ‘Report of the Truth of the Fight About the Iles of the Açores this last Summer’ (1596), the story of Sir Richard Grenville and “The Revenge”; ‘Discovery of Guiana’ (1596); and ‘History of the World’ (1614 or 1615), a splendid fragment written during his imprisonment in the Tower by King James. Many of his writings, including his poems, circulated in manuscript long after his death. (See Critical and Biographical Introduction).
