Redwitz (-Schmölz), Oskar von (red’vitz-shmėlts). A German poet; born at Lichtenau, Bavaria, June 28, 1823; died on July 7, 1891. He gained wide reputation by his first work, ‘Amaranth’ (1849), an epic poem written in praise of Roman-Catholicism; and his later works did not fall short of his early promise. They include: ‘Tales of the Forest Brook and the Pine’; ‘Hermann Stark,’ a novel (1868); the remarkable ‘Lay of the New German Empire’ (1871); ‘Odilo’ (1878); ‘The Wartenberg House’ (1884); and ‘Hymen’ (1887).
