Henri-Laurent Rivière (1827–1883)
Rivière, Henri-Laurent (riv-yãr’). A French marine officer and littérateur; born in Paris, July 12, 1827; killed in Anam, May 20, 1883. He acquired a speedy popularity by two simple tales, ‘Pierrot’ (1860), and ‘Cain’ (1870). He afterward produced many stories, comedies, and works of a more serious character, among them being: ‘The French Navy under Louis XV.’ (1859); ‘The Possessed One’ (1863); ‘The Journal of a Marine’ (1866); ‘The Upstart’ (1869); ‘Adventures of Three Friars’ (1875); ‘M. Margerie’ (1875); and ‘The New Caledonia’ (1880).
