Jaufré Rudel (Twelfth Century)
Rudel, Jaufré, Gauffre or Godefroy, Prince of Blaye (rü-del’). A French troubadour of the twelfth century, who attached himself to the suite of Geoffrey, Count of Bretagne, son of Henry II. of England. The romantic story concerning him, which probably has little foundation in fact, is that he went to Syria in search of a fair countess of Tripoli, rumors of whose beauty had reached him; and was so overcome when he finally saw her and heard her voice that he fell dead at her feet. She buried him with great pomp, and retired to a convent to mourn him all her days.
