Francisque Sarcey (1827–1899)
Sarcey, Francisque (sär-sā’). A French author and critic; born at Dourdan (Seine-et-Oise), Oct. 8, 1827; died at Paris, May 16, 1899. As a dramatic critic he was highly esteemed for his independence of judgment, and his wide acquaintance with dramatic literature and the history of the stage. He published: ‘History of the Siege of Paris,’ which in its first year reached the 30th edition; ‘The Word and the Thing,’ philosophical conversations (1862); ‘Étienne Moret,’ a semi-autobiographical story (1875); ‘Recollections of Youth’ (1884); ‘Recollections of Mature Age’; ‘Forty Years of the Theatre’ (1900).
