Michel-Jean Sedaine (1719–1797)

Sedaine, Michel-Jean (sed-ān’). A French playwright; born at Paris, July 4, 1719; died there, May 17, 1797. He is regarded as the originator of comic opera. Among his works are the comic operas: ‘Playing the Deuce’; ‘The King and the Farmer’; ‘Richard Cœur de Lion’; ‘Aline, Queen of Golconda.’ His comedies, ‘The Philosopher without Knowing It’ (1765) and ‘The Unexpected Wager’ (1768) won for him membership of the Academy; they have still a place in the repertoire of French theatres.
