John Sherman (1823–1900)

Sherman, John. An American statesman; born in Lancaster, OH, May 10, 1823; died in Washington, Oct. 22, 1900. He was first elected to Congress in 1854; Senator, 1861–73; and 1881–87; Secretary of the Treasury, 1877–81; and Secretary of State from 1897. He is the author of ‘Selected Speeches and Reports on Finance and Taxation, 1859–1878’ (New York, 1879); and ‘Recollections of Forty Years in the House, Senate, and Cabinet.’
