Connop Thirlwall (1797–1875)
Thirlwall, Connop. An eminent English historian; born at Stepney, London, Feb. 11, 1797; died on July 27, 1875, at Bath. He was Bishop of St. David’s 1840–74. His principal work is a ‘History of Greece’ (8 vols., 1835–40; enlarged 1845–52). He made, with J. C. Hare, the English translation of Niebuhr’s ‘History of Rome’ (2 vols 1828).
