George Makepeace Towle (1841–1893)

Towle, George Makepeace. An American journalist, author, and littérateur. He was born in Washington, DC, Aug. 27, 1841; died in Brookline, MA, Aug. 10, 1893. He was United States consul at Nantes, France, 1866–68; and at Bradford, England, 1868–70. His works include: ‘Glimpses of History’ (1865); ‘Henry the Fifth’ (1866); ‘American Society’ (1870); ‘The Eastern Question’ (1877); ‘The Principalities of the Danube: Servia and Roumania’ (1877); ‘Beaconsfield’ (1878); ‘Young Folks’ Heroes of History’ (1878–80); ‘Modern France’ (1879); ‘Certain Men of Mark: Studies of Living Celebrities’ (1880); ‘England and Russia in Asia’ (1885); ‘England in Egypt’ (1885); ‘Literature of the English Language.’
