Giorgio Vasari (1511–1574)

Vasari, Giorgio Cavaliere (vä-sä’rē). An Italian painter and writer; born in Arezzo, 1511; died in 1574. He studied under Michaelangelo and other masters; he was then patronized by the Medici family at Florence, where Cardinal Farnese employed him to write the lives of artists. He published these in 1550 with the title of ‘Lives of the most Eminent Painters, Sculptors, and Architects’ in two volumes, frequently reprinted. (See Critical and Biographical Introduction).
