Ramón Velez-Herrera (1808–1887)

Velez-Herrera, Ramón (vā’leth-ā-rā’rä). A Cuban author; born in Havana in 1808; died there in 1887. He abandoned law for literature. The first collection of his poems was published at Havana in 1833, a second in 1837, and a third in 1838. He also published: ‘Elvira de Oquendo’; ‘The Two Bridegrooms,’ a comedy (1848); ‘Autumn Flowers,’ a collection of poems (1849); ‘Cuban Romances’ (1856); ‘Napoleon in Berlin,’ a tragedy (1860); and ‘Flowers of Winter,’ poems (1882).
