Lamii (Mohammed Ben Osman Ben Ali Nakkash)

Poems from Oriental Languages: Orthodoxy, or the Doxy?

(Turkish—Sixteenth Century)

Translation in Dublin University Magazine

ONE day in catechizing me, the Khodja asked me Whether

I could feel happy in a palace, living in idolatry:

I said, With her I worshiped, surely, though we dwelt together

Not underneath a palace roof, but in a cave or hollow tree.
