A Group of Indian Epigrams: The Senses

Translation of Charles Rockwell Lanman, editor

A MAN is like a water-skin:

Wisdom, like water, is within.

Five wretched senses man do cumber:

Four legs and neck are five in number.

If even one its tightness lose,

All water from the bag will ooze:

If of one sense man lose control,

All wisdom oozeth from his soul.
