Lorenzo Valla (1407–1457)

Valla, Lorenzo or Laurentius (väl’lä). An Italian classical scholar and critic; born about 1407; died on Aug. 1, 1457. Among his writings are: ‘Elegancies of the Latin Language’ (1471); ‘Of Pleasure’; a tractate ‘Against the Donation of Constantine,’ alluding to the fabled concession of the district of Rome to the popes.
