Background: Genre: Folklore

The Pearl is based on a Mexican folk legend Steinbeck had heard during his travels. In his interpretation of the legend, however, Steinbeck has changed some details pertaining to the protagonist and his community in order to address more universal themes, such as the corruptive and destructive aspects of greed. The legend is transposed into the context of the American Dream and explores the tensions between distinct civilizational ethos, as embodied by the conflict between Kino, the protagonist, and a set of exploitative pearl buyers.
