In cell cycle, crossing over is the exchange of genetic material between two homologous chromosomes. This occurs due to genetic shuffling and is the cause of a large variation in offspring.

Step 2

Figure 1 is an example of alternate segregation. Here, non-adjacent homologs of the two chromosomes separate together. Since, alternate segregation results in balanced gametes formation, they will result in a viable progeny.
