Eukaryotes are majorly multicellular animals and their cells exhibit division of labor. Eukaryotic cells are advanced than prokaryotes. The cell organelles of eukaryotic cells are membrane bound and they have internal compartmentalization based on the function involved.

The following are the adaptive advantages of functional intracellular compartments in eukaryotic cells:

  • Several chemical reactions takes place in the cytoplasm and require different pH. Intracellular compartments provide heterogeneous pH environments for different chemical reactions to take place in the cell.
  • The function of enzymes is specific and they are secreted within the cytosol also. Enzymes such as lytic enzymes destroy aged organelles and molecules. If they are not confined within specific compartment even the newly generated organelles and molecules will be destroyed. Thus, compartmentalization is required to confine lytic enzymes.
